Test all return jets for proper flow and direction
Verify skimmers are pulling water correctly
Turn on pool heater (if applicable) — verify it lights and heats

Test and reset pool lights (LED color modes if applicable)
Run cleaner (robotic or pressure-side) to verify operation
💡 Dave's March Tip:
Don't wait until it's already 100°F to start up your pool. March is perfect — temperatures are mild, algae hasn't had time to bloom, and you can catch equipment issues before they become summer emergencies. I see a flood of panicked calls every May from people who waited too long!
Phase 3 — Chemical Balance (March)
Take water sample to pool store for full lab analysis
Tip: Take sample from 18" below surface, away from jets
Adjust Total Alkalinity to 80–120 ppm first
Adjust pH to 7.4–7.6 (wait 4 hours between adjustments)
Shock pool with chlorine — 2 lbs per 10,000 gallons for startup
Add cyanuric acid (stabilizer) if below 40 ppm — essential in AZ
Adjust calcium hardness to 200–400 ppm
Run pump 24 hours after chemical additions
Retest water after 48 hours and fine-tune
Phase 4 — Safety Check (Before First Swim)
Inspect and test pool fence, gate, and self-latching mechanism
Verify pool alarm is functioning
Check drain covers — replace any cracked or missing anti-entrapment covers
Confirm rescue equipment (ring buoy + rope) is accessible at poolside
Review pool rules with all family members and guests
Verify emergency numbers are posted at poolside
